#8: Sure, Why Not

Sure, Why Not

Like the creators of Darths & Droids, I keep a list of stupid things from the movie that I have to explain. One of them is the address system for the Stargates, which SG-1 did their best to ignore, except for the seventh symbol being the point of origin (and even that it applied half-heartedly and inconsistently).

I like players who improvise. This can be a mixed blessing, but it can take the campaign in a whole new (hopefully interesting) direction. On the other hand, I think there’s a threshold beyond which the GM should just say “no” instead of allowing to ruin the basic rules set up in place for the world.

This applies equally well to other kinds of collaborative fiction with a dictator on top, such as, say, Star Wars... except there, the rules not nearly as rigidly enforced, with results of varying quality.

I considered ending the strip with “based on Dan’s idea about constellations. ... And aliens.” I’m still not sure if this version is better, but I had to pick one.

Vision-Impaired Transcript

Daniel: I could integrate the seventh symbol into my guess if I really wanted to…
Meyers: Six for the destination, and only one for the source? How does that make sense?
Daniel: Look, I didn’t design that thing. Ask the aliens who did!
{O’Neil, Catherine and Meyers look amused each in their own way}
GM: O…okay. I suggest we take a break, so I can redraw the Stargate based on Dan’s ideas.
GM: Where’s that star chart?

I love what you are doing. Stargate is one of my favorite series and a webcomic based off of it is great.

That being said I don’t see why you consider the tracking system to be a stupid thing that needs to be explained.

Thanks for your interest in the comic!

The ways in which Daniel’s proposed addressing system doesn’t make sense have been listed quite a number of times on various Stargate fansites, including the GateWorld forums. For my view on this, see this rant. (Above all, I’m not bashing Stargate — it’s one of my favorite SF series, if not the most favorite!)

Thanks for the link. I was simply curious because it made sense to me, but the article pointed out several things I hadn’t considered. Keep up the good work.
